Poppies in the Ruins

November 11th

Corn poppies or Flanders poppies are native to the Mediterranean areas of Europe. They grow abundantly all over southern Europe and in Flanders Fields. In the U.K. they used to grow and still do in places, in fields of wheat, commonly called corn at that time.

The poppies below are growing in the ruins of Herculaneum near Pompeii in Italy and although these ruins were not caused through war, I couldn’t help but think how appropriate at this time, when so many countries are in ruins from war, to share poppies in the ruins. Will people be taking photographs of today’s ruins in two thousand years time, I wonder. It is time to remember.
