Oh my – where did that week go?! Gardening season is in full swing and it is difficult to keep up. Now is also the week of the Chelsea Flower Show in London U.K. with nightly specials on Britbox. So many new ideas and plants to look for!

The Daffodils and Tulips are coming to a close in my garden. A few linger but the big show is fading. The wind has taken much of the Apple and Crabapple blossom. The dwarf iris are doing well and in place of many of the early bulbs. I don’t have lilac due to someone’s allergies but they are blooming all over town and the fragrance is wonderful. These are new this week in my garden:

Sweet Cicely, Myrrhis odorata

I might get into trouble with this one as it is on an invasive list in certain parts of B.C. However it is very contained in my mini-meadow and does not appear to readily spread. It is so pretty with a lovely anise scent.

Cranesbills Geraniums, pheum and unknown

These Cranebills are garden basics but phaeum (deep red)will self-seed everywhere if not careful!

Columbine, Granny’s Bonnets, Aquilegia and Yellow Archangel, Lamiastrum galeobdolan

Caragana

Known as windbreak hedges on the prairie, there are several ornamentals such as Fern-Leaf Caragana Lorbergii and Weeping Caragana arborescens’Pendula.’ They are both showing their pea-like yellow flowers now.

Bringing the garden inside:

Lily-of-the-Valley, Convallaria majalis

Beyond the garden gate:

Masses of yellow Holly Grape bloom, Mahonia. It will be a good year for Holly Grape Jelly. The dainty pink flowers of Kinnikinik are flowering at the same time, red berries to follow.

False Soloman’s Seal, Smilacena racemosa, now Maianthemum racemosum and Tower Rock Cress, Turritis

Heart Leaf Arnica, Arnica cordifolia

Pink Pussy Toes, Antennaria and Wild Strawberry, Fragaria

Prairie Smoke, Old Man’s Whiskers, Avens, Geum triflorum

The quiet ones also shown last week but these are larger specimens!
