My perennials have really slowed down with another sudden burst of heat and dry conditions with quickly shortening daylight hours. I really hope we don’t get a sudden September frost which is possible in the mountains, because my Zinnias are loaded with buds. However, as with all plants they understand the seasons most of the time and will act accordingly.

My first vase is Simplicity. One of my Gerberas decided to have another burst of energy and put up one flower for me. I see another coming but this beauty could not be left where I cannot see it from a window. I love Peony leaves at this time of year as their chlorophyll breaks down into reds, and browns. A little dead twig off my Harry Lauder Walking Stick, Coryllus avellana ‘Contorta’ and we were done.

This next vase is a bit garish, the vase that is, but I like the feel of it and it is fun for larger items. It was another thrift store find and I understand why it was there as I use it infrequently but the Peony leaves, seed heads of Meadow Sweet, Filipendula and an assortment of Rudbeckia seemed to suit it. The backdrop of a painting by Maureen Porter, ‘Mountain Sheep’ on the slopes, seemed appropriate colour wise.
