My favourite carol:-

… In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron
Water like a stone
Snow had fallen
Snow on snow, snow on snow

This pretty much describes my and every other zone three garden right now. Fresh flowers come from the florist or supermarket after travelling great distances to reach our deprived gardening souls.

For today, I reused some of the dried flowers hanging in the greenhouse to stuff an old copper pot. I rather liked the patina of the pot with the Red Osier Dogwood, Cornus siberica leftovers from Christmas so after starting with that, I added some old Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus cinerea, Japanese Lanterns, Physalis alkekengi, and Purple Statice, Limonium. It was interesting to note the two species of Eucalyptus. I grew one species “Silver Dollar’ from seed last year, not nearly enough, so will definitely plant more this year as I was impressed with how easy it was. The other type was a from an old dried bunch I originally purchased and had in a bathroom.

I will now have a peek at all those fresh flower arrangements on ‘Rambling In the Garden’ where Cathy hosts this fun Monday activity where we use flowers from our gardens in arrangements. I hope you will too.

That is just beautiful. Quite a nice assemblage from things just lying around! Interesting the eucalyptuses were easy to grow. I’d never thought to grow it from seed. Would be great to have on hand for arrangements.

Yes, I was surprised with the Eucalyptus but our hot dry summers seemed to suit them. I shall plant more this year.

Your dried flowers are a joy, Jenny! I love the Japanese lanterns but I’ve never seen them grown here.

They spread like crazy if not contained but I do love them for a shot of colour in winter!

I don’t know what I did wrong with my last couple of messages to you but they didn’t get through! I really just wanted to say’thinking about you’ in these disastrous fires. Terrifying. How far away are you? I wish rain for you and a drop in the winds. Take Care.

Oh, so lovely Jenny! Simply gorgeous! The copper pot really sets off those colours nicely. The Physalis and Statice have kept their colours well. I had some Physalis in my old garden where it practically took over, so I decided not to plant any here. But it is pretty and I miss it!

Thank you! Yes, Physalis will quickly run rampant if allowed! I’ve got it well contained but the deer decimated them last year. They are learning to eat anything and everything. These were kindly donated from a friend!

This is gloriously bright and cheerful – what a joy in December, and well done for resisting the supermarket flowers! I am curious about the eucalyptus you grow – do you grow it as an annual?

I won’t be resisting for long!! Yes, I grew the Eucalyptus as an annual. It would not survive winter here. I started it indoors in March, planted out in May and by September it was about 24″ tall single stems of lovely scented, blue grey leaves.
