In a Vase, Monday, March 10, 2025

There are most definitely signs of spring around here although a few drifts of snow still need to melt away in the garden. I was happy to see Hyacinth cones poking out from the now soggy, compacted leaves that I flipped on to the flower beds in the fall.

My little triumph(to me) this week is that the Freesia bulbs I planted last fall in the house, managed to produce two blooms, yes, two blooms! I really did not know what to expect as I had not tried forcing Freesias before but I do love them and miss them from years ago. Their fragrance is unbeatable. As a cut flower they are not transported up here so far from their comfortable temperate more coastal climates as they do not travel well. I have learned a few things in this process and am hopeful they will do better next year but here are this year’s tiny harvest with a few Muscari also forced indoors.

Hermes, the messenger, a Greek god, whose main skill is speed, is heralding spring. Hermes, also has a more cunning side and apparently represents many other more suspicious traits so this old car hood ornament seemed an appropriate representation for today’s world.

Just look at the blue stigma, stamens and pollen! I found this particularly interesting because in my foray into eco printing, I have learned most orange/red flowers will yield a blue dye when hammered.

Because I am eight to ten hours behind some of you who read this blog, I will post this today, Sunday March 9.

Your freesias are so pretty Jenny! I love them and their fragrance too, but had never thought to grow them myself! And you have a Muscari too! Wonderful! Spring must be near. 😃

      Muscari are the forced ones!

Yay, for your success with the Freesias, Jenny! I think I have but a single red one in my own garden – for some reason, the yellow/gold variety seems to be the most prolific in my garden. I love the addition of the Hermes car hood ornament – he’s the perfect prop for your spring-y arrangement.

Thank you Kris. I will try the Freesias indoors again next year and aim for at least three!

A well balanced arrangement, I love the space and the feint shadow on the wall behind. The detail of the freesia is nicely caught.

Nice lines in the vase. I remember trying Freesias once, unsuccessfully.

They are a cool temperate weather bulb, so good for you for trying!

How intriguing the freesias are – and intersting to know you successfully grew them inside the house. I have started off some ranunculus in the g/h this year – they have now sprouted but I am not sure yet whether to grow them on inside or out…need to have a look online for suggestions. Your overall montage looks perfectly balanced, especially with the presence of Hermes – he’s a dark horse, isn’t he?! 😁

I wouldn’t say successfully as they look very bedraggled! The two flowering stems were worth it however and I’ll have another go next year giving them more direct light.I think your Ranunculus will be very happy outside with your more consistent temps! Good luck.
