In a Vase, Monday March 17, 2025

It is the perfect time to show my ‘new’, green, vase for St Patrick’s Day, with an an expensive bunch of tulips! I was so excited to discover this vintage Hull vase on a local Facebook Marketplace and with the help of a friend, was able to get it transported from a distance away. You can probably imagine the groans of, ” What do you need another one for?” from, well, I needn’t say need I?

I had to resort to purchasing flowers for this week as I really did not want to show another forced Hyacinth. I am happy to say the bulbs are emerging in the garden and I found some Johnny Jump Ups, Viola in flower this week. They are such cheerful little things blooming in all kinds of weather and temperature.

I also purchased some fabulous Pussy Willow, Salix caprea that came from a local grower. The neighbouring Creston Valley is warmer than this Kootenay Valley and as a result their plants are usually a week or two ahead. Thirdly and in keeping with the three part clover leaf design on Irish Belleek China, I sacrificed one flower from my last Amaryllis, Hippeastrum blooming for the second time this winter. It opened its first bloom January 25th and now again in March.

St. Patick’s Day Triptych

I am looking forward to seeing what I can come up with for this vase once more blooms arrive.

Please head over to Cathy’s Rambling in the Garden, IAVOM, where there are links to many more creative and beautiful flower arrangements. Thank you for hosting Cathy.

Once again I am posting a little early to catch other time zones.

Oh I LOVE your new green vase, and it’s definitely one for tulips with the random angles of the stems! My tulips in pots are emerging, but blooms will be a month off yet, I imagine, although the little species ones usually flower earlier. You have co-ordinated your hippeastrum perfectly with the timely book, so it was well worth picking it to share with us. The ones I bought for this season have been especially productive, with each having three or even four stems over a long period

Mine have been productive this year too for some reason! Like people I guess! Other years I wonder if they will produce at all!! My tulips are about 3′ out of the ground – they always amaze me with what they get up to under the snow.

I’d have bought that vase to if I came upon it – it’s a great find, Jenny! It looks perfect with the tulips too. I’ve more vases than I have space for and, despite the fact that I often use the same ones over and over again, that never stops me from getting another one when the mood strikes 😉

Me too but what a harmless and fun hobby – to always be on the lookout for new vases! Storage can be a problem sometimes but where there is a will…!

The new vase is a star and you’ve designed the tulips so well for its inaugural IAVOM appearance.

Love the new vase Jenny! Can’t wait to see you put it to use in future Monday posts! All the flowers and the pussy willow are lovely too. The Amaryllis has been fabulous and the jug with the clover is perfect for St Patrick’s Day!
