In a vase, Monday April 7, 2025

Spring sprung! Temperatures above 10C favoured us this weekend. Long days cleaning up and preparing the garden have given us great feelings of accomplishment.

The winter took its toll as usual on some plants and shrubs. This year, it was not so much sudden and drastic plunges into the Arctic but the weight of the heavy snow and resulting ice. My ‘Star’ Magnolia, Magnolia stellata lost several of its lower branches completely. It was not big to begin with so to see several branches, twigs really, broken off and resting on the ground was sad. Always hopeful for the fuzzy little buds, I picked them up a couple of weeks ago, gave them a fresh cut and put in water. To my delight and excitement the buds swelled and finally lifted off their hats and…..

I hope the remaining buds do the same and only time will tell. Meanwhile although there will be less blooms on the shrub in the garden, we have had the pleasure of them inside. This Magnolia is one of very few magnolias which will survive our winters so she is pretty special.

Accompanied by a skimpy garden Hyacinth, from beside the house and some fuzzy Lamb’s Ears, Stachys byzantina to match the buds fuzzy scales, here is:

Little pixies providing hope and joy!

Please head over to see more flowers from gardens more advanced than here (but we are catching up quickly) on Cathy’s blog ‘Rambling In the Garden’! Thank you for hosting Cathy.

Yay, for the Magnolia’s resilience! Your arrangement makes elegant use of your early blooms, Jenny. I hope spring continues unrolling gracefully in your garden.

Oh what a positive outcome from the loss of your magnolia’s branches! It is always a joy to have buds open up inside, therefore even more so after their original demise. You have used the stems in your vase so stylishly, and I am sure the arrangement will bring you much joy

Yes, always good to get positive and plants always manage to provide that don’t they! The arrangement went to our little art gallery but there are more buds opening!
