In a Vase, Monday June 16, 2025

Yay, I have flowers to choose from! It always amazes me that in March I really have nothing and by mid-June the garden has become a jungle. It seems to take forever for the blooms to appear but then in the sudden heat, they do not last as long as they could, so I have learned to pick more flowers than I used to and bring inside where it is cooler. This always provides a lot of pleasure for floral compositions.

The Mock Orange, Philadelphus was the first to succumb to my secateurs this last week. Augmented with white Peonies, name unknown and using a ‘Bridal’ theme, I used Sweet Rocket, Hesperis matronalis, Lamb’s Ears, Stachys byzantina, Lady’s Mantle, Alchemilla mollis and Artemesia ludoviciana, ‘Valerie Finnis’ all in a green metal ‘rose bowl’.

Bridal

For a complete change and to use some of the ‘brights’ in the garden at the moment, I mixed them all up into ‘Tutti Frutti’. Ranunculus, Anemones, Yellow Loosestrife, Lysimachia punctata, Lady’s Mantle, Alchemilla mollis, Feverfew, Tanacetum parthenium, Clustered Bellflower, Campanula glomerata and Cress seed head. These are in a simple glass cube perfect for gift giving.

With their flowering season being so short I thought the peonies needed another spot in the limelight!

Candy Floss

Another ‘rose bowl’ full of peonies of unknown parentage.

Thank you to Cathy of ‘Rambling In The Garden’ for hosting this fun Monday activity. I hope you are able to visit her page for more floral inspirations.

Lovely combinations, Jenny. Peonies, anemones and ranunculus are favorites of mine!

This is the first time I have grown Ranunculus and for the short beautiful reward, I am still evaluating! I’m all for easy these days and these will need to be dug up stored well and then nurtured through March and April. Their future is to be determined although I do love them.

Such a bounty of blooms, Jenny! My own Anemones and Ranunculus are already long gone, such is the difference between our climates. Peonies appear to be beyond my scope entirely – my Itoh peony has been in the ground for 12 years and has never bloomed and, after a scant display over a few years, my Majorcan peony seems to have faded away. I’ll make do admiring yours!

Isn’t that interesting. I thought peonies were fullproof – as you say climate differences. It appears you can grow many of my old favourites but also many that are only in my dreams!!

June is a wonderful time in the garden, isn’t it! I love your green and white arrangement – it is calming and cooling too. And the peonies are simply gorgeous. Mine have been flowering for a while and are still hanging on, so I must pick some more before it’s too late.

Yes, Peony season is so very short especially in the heat! I guess that is why we love them so much!

What a nice assortment you have to choose from! Surprising myself, I really like the white arrangement.

Yes, the flowers are coming very quickly! Everyday a surprise! Glad you like the white!

Oh, they are all so beautiful! I have some pink Peonies like those and they are ‘Sarah Bernhardt.’ Love the Anemones and mixed color arrangement, too, and the white collection is so graceful.

I have wondered if they are Sarah Barnhardt so thank you. I must try to identify my others!

One day I hope they become real for you!

All three vases are charming. I love the wedding themed one with mostly greens and whites with that peony being a standout. I agree with Beth your pink peony looks like ‘Sarah Bernhardt.’

Thank you – I will now refer to the pink one as ‘Sarah B’. Just a few more to go!

Gosh, a triple whammy! I especially like the white and green vase though, a combination that always looks so stylish. Mind you, the alchemilla really sets the blooms off in the second vase too. All lovely 👍

Thank you so much Cathy. Once the flowers arrive, they call to be used!
