In a Vase, Monday February 16th 2026

Winter has arrived. Two months late but today it is snowing and has been all day. I am happy to see precipitation after two months of winter drought but it is hard to accept that I must dig out spiked boots and a hat to walk the dogs. I think I may not go out at all today.

Any hope of green has been covered and I admit to being truly stumped today for what I might use for in a vase. The forced hyacinths are over and my one remaining Hippeastrum is not a show stopper. Hoping for Pussy Willow I remembered these dried ‘Bunny Tails’ , Lagurus ovatus hanging with a few other dried flowers in the greenhouse. So here they are in an old ‘pork pie’ ink pot. ‘Pork pie because they have the shape of an English pork pie. This is the tallest one I have at three inches. Most are shorter.

A rustic brown ceramic vase filled with delicate, fluffy dried flowers, set against a plain background.
Close-up of delicate, fluffy white plant material against a soft background.

After taking a close up I thought the image rather reflected the snowy day outside.

Thank you Cathy of ‘Rambling In the Garden’ for Monday inspirations.

I love anything fuzzy, and you’re right – it does match a snowstorm.

So you have ink pots too! I have never heard the term ‘pork pie’ ink pot, but of course it is very apt. I love it of course, but also the lagurus, which is a plant I sow every year, and I have had a little (ink!) pot of them sitting on a shelf in our shower room for years. Yours are even fluffier than mine and are glorious, so thank you so much for sharing them.

So many ink pots out there, some so beautiful, made when every day things were frequently made to be decorative. I am not a minimalist by any means and love my eclectic odd items gleaned from others cast offs!! I don’t have a collection however! It is amazing how long dried grasses and flowers last isn’t it!
