It seems like I have been saying, ‘Here comes Spring’ for weeks but then, this morning a fresh covering of snow greeted us. It won’t last but temperatures hovering just above zero are not enticing me into the garden today. The Hellebores are hanging their heads in dismay and the goldfish have returned to the deepest depths of our small pond.

No matter, having been out there cleaning up beds for the past week, it is time to pay attention to a few other household chores. In my constant attempt to hurry things along, I crammed branches of Larch, Plum, Hawthorn and Forsythia into one of my larger cubic vases in the hopes of a chartreuse, white, green and yellow melange opening up in a few days. The smaller ikebana contains a garden Hyacinth, Hellebore, Forsythia and snippits of a Box Buxus ‘Green Mountain’ that has been discarded. This Buxus suffered winter burn every year so I have replaced with a newer, even hardier variety, Buxus ‘Calgary.’

The branches were transported to The Gallery as I really don’t have room in the house for something so large!

Short seasons like ours can be frustrating for gardeners and I will admit to sometimes longing for a more evenly paced season. However, come November, I know I will be ready to put the tools away for a while.
