Why another post on apples? We have so many, the dehydrator came out today. Our freezer has so much juice there will not be enough space for the, yet to be made, apple pies! I also had a phone call asking where a person can rent a press.
See below.

It is surprising that with the drought we have experienced all summer, our apple trees seem to be loaded. This may be due to the good watering habits in spring when there were no restrictions. Apple trees have deep roots and they draw upon that deep down moisture when they need it. Trees that do not do well have run out of that reservoir. Our trees may rebel next season however and not produce as well.
It was surprising this year in my garden, anyway, that not too many small apples were shed. If a tree has more fruit than it can cope with, nature’s way is for the tree to lose many of its young fruit.
Dried apples are such a great snack to pack when hiking or those afternoon nibbles. We have one counter top dehydrator and so does my daughter so she will occasionally borrow ours to take care of her extra fruit. To make any baking with apples easy we also have an apply corer and slicer. It works so well for this process also. They are not expensive and make a wonderful gift for anyone who loves baking or has an apple tree! The most difficult part is cutting out any wormy or damaged bits first.

Renting a juice press: We are so lucky in this area of the Kootenays that Wildsight, a local society dedicated to the benefit of our environment, has a wealth of equipment to rent to take care of these needs. They also run an Apple Capture program each year for those who do not want their apples. If you have apples and have never juiced this way, it will provide a lot of fun and learning. I highly recommend it.
