Once again I am celebrating my garden flowers in the company of all the other garden enthusiasts from around the world, who join Cathy from ‘Rambling In The Garden’, every Monday.

It was 4C yesterday morning, a warning that frost may come at any time. We used to frequently have frosts by this time but in recent years it seems to get later. The days are clear with blue sky and up to 21c by the afternoon – absolutely perfect as far as I am concerned. With trees on the turn, it is time to think about what to leave and what to tidy up in the garden. Yesterday, while pulling up the Cynoglossum and getting covered in sticky seeds, it was noticeable how many of the annuals are shutting down. They need warm temperatures to keep on flowering and hitting 21C for a couple of hours in the afternoon is not enough.

So this might be almost the last from the cutting bed. I say almost, because you never know for sure. The snapdragons will keep going through the first few frosts.

Summer Ends

I finally picked one Celosia which sat all summer and did nothing from the time I planted it out. It needed more light and never got over the slow start to summer. A couple of Zinnias, Larkspur the ‘oh so frilly’ Cosmos, Snapdragons ‘Chantilly Lace’, some pink Yarrow, and Penny Cress rounded this out.

Elegance

From the perennial border comes the elegant and heavily perfumed Cimicifuga, Snakeroot, Actea, Bugbane, Baneberry, whatever you wish to call it. This has been new to bloom in the last week. the bees and numerous other insects love it but photographing it in a vase is not easy, I discovered. It really needed a dark backdrop to show it off. This flower(s)is a stand alone I feel, as it is so distinctive. The leaves also are gorgeous and hold up so well in water.
