In a Vase, Monday September 16

Once again I am celebrating my garden flowers in the company of all the other garden enthusiasts from around the world, who join Cathy from ‘Rambling In The Garden’, every Monday.

It was 4C yesterday morning, a warning that frost may come at any time. We used to frequently have frosts by this time but in recent years it seems to get later. The days are clear with blue sky and up to 21c by the afternoon – absolutely perfect as far as I am concerned. With trees on the turn, it is time to think about what to leave and what to tidy up in the garden. Yesterday, while pulling up the Cynoglossum and getting covered in sticky seeds, it was noticeable how many of the annuals are shutting down. They need warm temperatures to keep on flowering and hitting 21C for a couple of hours in the afternoon is not enough.

So this might be almost the last from the cutting bed. I say almost, because you never know for sure. The snapdragons will keep going through the first few frosts.

Summer Ends

I finally picked one Celosia which sat all summer and did nothing from the time I planted it out. It needed more light and never got over the slow start to summer. A couple of Zinnias, Larkspur the ‘oh so frilly’ Cosmos, Snapdragons ‘Chantilly Lace’, some pink Yarrow, and Penny Cress rounded this out.

Elegance

From the perennial border comes the elegant and heavily perfumed Cimicifuga, Snakeroot, Actea, Bugbane, Baneberry, whatever you wish to call it. This has been new to bloom in the last week. the bees and numerous other insects love it but photographing it in a vase is not easy, I discovered. It really needed a dark backdrop to show it off. This flower(s)is a stand alone I feel, as it is so distinctive. The leaves also are gorgeous and hold up so well in water.

Do head over to Rambling in the garden where Cathy kindly hosts ‘In a Vase On Monday’, IAVOM. There you will find many inspiring arrangements from all over the world!

A bowlful of summer, wonderful colors and form. I like the way you’ve displayed the Snakeroot, nice and simple.

I do like the simplicity of the second arrangement but I LOVE the first arrangement! I hope frost holds off for while let to allow you to enjoy more of those flowers. Frost is a foreign concept in my part of the world but I imagine that it would drive me crazy!

I have never lived anywhere that did not have frosts! It’s interesting how our bodies adapt because I look forward to cooler weather but not losing my flowers!! Where are you? I find it interesting how so many of us grow similar flowers even in different climates. Glad you appreciated my very pink collection!

A beautiful arrangement! The simple one is lovely in it’s own right.

The first arrangement is a lovely, airy blend of bright blooms. Very expertly done! What a great idea with the Bugbane, too! Mine went to seed long ago, but I absolutely love it in the garden and in vases. Thank you for the smiles. 🙂

Thank you so much Beth although I don’t know about expertly! I just love playing with flowers! Our season is pretty short and some years some plants don’t quite make it to bloom but many do of course and for those I am so thankful!
