In a Vase, Monday August 17 2026

We had some rain, yay, and the smoke cleared for a couple of days which was lovely. The cutain reappeared over the mountains again today but with so many forest fires burning it will be awhile before we regain our clear mountain air.

A friend, who had spent an extended work experience in Japan, gifted me an Ikebana bowl, much larger than my little Ikebana vases. I am thrilled but I have yet to master the art of Ikebana. Negative space and minimalism are two concepts that challenge me so I hope I have not offended any Ikebana masters with my creations today.

For my first attempt, I thought I would use the bowl as a bowl and not worry about the true use for this vase. I had a lot of yellow blooms in the garden and thought I might be able to create a dome of airy flowers and foliage. I was not thrilled with the result even with the chicken wire and frog, I found it hard to create the effect I wanted – the dome did not materialise but the flowers got to show off a little.

For my second attempt, I knew I must be true to the vase. The difficulty I have with the deep sides is how to display within them but maybe this is where I must use the minamalism.

A decorative bowl with vibrant pink and orange flowers, placed on a colourful patterned surface, with a soft pink sofa visible in the background.

So, there we are, two fun sessions with another new vase. I love new vessels to play with!

If there are any Ikebana artists out there, I would love to see your creations. Please visit Cathy’s blog, ‘Rambling In the Garden’, where Cathy invites to share our garden flowers in a vase and on Mondays. I see she has brandy to share today.
